With a thoroughly successful Pink Lady Drakenstein Canoe Race now behind us, paddled on great water, we can now set our sights on the 2016 Berg River Canoe Marathon from 13 to 16 July.
Normal entries are open!
The deadline for normal entries is 10pm on Wednesday night next week (29 June). Remember there are rules in place this year designed to ensure the safety of every paddler that takes part, in the form of qualifiers and proficiency – these can all be read here. And remember if there is a sound reason why you can’t meet these requirements, there is a simple process of submitting a letter of motivation to the race committee, and they will do everything in their power to get you onto the water!
Entries are quick and simply online here. The list of confirmed entries can be found here. From Thursday morning next week a late entry fee will apply.
International team
Many of our top paddlers have committed to racing the Berg this year, and the race promises to be really competitive with the news that four top internationals have already entered the race! It will be a pleasure to welcome Aussies Brendan Rice and Josh Kippin to the race with Czech Republic racer Petr Mojžíšek, and this week the Hungarian K2 World Champion Adrian Boros added his name to the start list!
Water updates
The winter rains have well and truly arrived in the Western Cape and it was heartening to hear that the dam levels are all rising, and that the water table is back to it’s normal winter level. For a country in the grip of the La Niña drought, this is music to the ears of Berg paddlers, and we trust the next three weeks will have more of the same!
You can keep an eye on key water levels readings from the DWAF sites on the Berg here.
Keeping the show on the road
We are delighted to have the Rola Motor Group on board as a sponsor of the race this year. Rola has a well established reputation in the motor industry, founded in 1963, based in Somerset West, with 15 dealerships that handle new and used vehicles from over a dozen manufacturers.
Their fit with an iconic South African sporting event is great, and we wish them a long and happy association with the Berg.
