BREEDE CANOE MARATHON – 3 AND 4 SEPTEMBER 2016 – SA K3 CHAMPIONSHIPS
A number of Gautengers trekked to the Western Cape to enjoy the pristine scenery of the Breede River to participate in the race. The first Gauteng finishers at the event were the 4th K3 at the Championships, as well as 2nd Sub Veteran team, who had practiced at the Centurion 9 Miler in August – Bruce and Wayne Jacobs, and Sean Martin (DABS) in a time of 5 hours 9 minutes. The winning K3 from the Eastern Cape paddling group’s time was 4 hours 52 minutes – flying youngsters.
Congratulations also to NWU team for their 1st Under 23 K3 finish in 5 hours 48 minutes – Herman Marais, Leo Kerkhoff, and Jason Spengler!
Andy Leith (DABS) partnered up with KZN paddlers Colin Simpkins and Marc Stanton to finish as the 3rd Veterans and 5th K3 finishers, in 5 hours 14 minutes.
The Lowvelders also participated in the event, with Gustav Smook and Junior finishing as 24th K2, in 5 hours 31 minutes. Dean Burscough and Harald Wattrus (Dabs) also raced in K2, finishing in 5 hours 43 minutes as 2nd Grand Masters.
