FEEDBACK – JCC KLIP TO VAAL RIVER RACE – SUNDAY 11 NOVEMBER
Another heat wave heat Gauteng in time for the JCC Klip to Vaal River Race which took place on Sunday 11 November, from Meyerton Danie Maclean Park, to finish at the Watuni Canoe Club, on the North West University grounds, in Vanderbijlpark……a distance of some 28 kms, with few major rapids, although a wide number of obstacles, tight hard working winding corners in fast flowing current as well as a number of bubblies – little wave trains and currents, as well as the tough hard working sluggish Vaal river – a section of some 12kms.
The winning K1 was Kobus Filmalter (Watuni) in 2 hours 12 minutes, as the top Veteran age category finisher, with second place being a Mixed Double – Richard Cele with Helen Jansen van Vuuren (VIC) in 2 hours 13 minutes. The 2nd K1 Finisher was Andre Zandbergh (WAT) in 2:19 as the first Sub Master Age category finisher, and another Mixed Double K2 brought in the 4th place finishers in 2 hours 26 minutes from Centurion – Richard Van Zyl and Lydia Opperman!
The 3rd K1 finisher, in this K1 year of competition, was JCC’s Thabo Selela also 1st under 16, in 2:28…..
Lady Finishers are always deserving of a mention – well done to Kirsty Pott (Dabs) a novice paddler first year on river, and first K1 river race ! and Hanli Bezuidenhout (CEN) also new first year lady paddler, as well as Sylvia Nel (LIK) and Mariette Zandbergh (WAT) – our lady finishers – in 2:44, 2:47 and 2:47 plus a split second and 2:51 respectively – well done – Veteran, SM, Master and Sub Veteran age categories!
Other K1 Podium positions recognised are Mohamed Patel (Dabs) 1st Sub Veteran K1 in 2:30, Kobus Ellis – 1st Male Master finisher in 2:48 (FLO), 1st Great Grand Master – Meyer steyn (Dabs) in 2:36, and Butch Grobbelaar a first year novice, the Great Grand Master K1 finisher in 3 hours 10 minutes.
