Well Done to all Gauteng paddlers who did the Great Trek to the Western Cape to fly the Gauteng flag on our behalf and make us proud!
Our Gauteng juniors certainly did us proud at the SA Marathon event from the K1 guppy discipline upwards, with Luke and Matthew Wilson (DABS) taking 1st and 2nd Under 8, while the Under 10 girls race was also won with a gold medal to Ameerah Hank (FLCC) and another gold to first place Under 12 girl, Kamilah Hank (FLCC)….. Tinyiko Mahwayi (SOW) achieved a 3rd place finish in girls Under 12 as well while in the Under 12 Boys, Finlay Leask (DABS) and Matthew van der Merwe (FLCC) were the first two finishers…..
Ayanda Chwayi earned a silver medal in the Girls Under 14 event, while Sibusiso Chwayi did the same in the Under 16 boys – (Both SOW). In the Under 18 boys race Alex Masina (JCC) finished in 4th place missing the third place podium by 2 minutes while Siseko Ntondini (SOW) also clinched the 4th position 2 minutes too late for the podium, in the Under 23 Men’s race.
In the C1 Discipline, the only competitor was Radoslaw Olszewski (ERK) who did a superb 2h20 despite nobody to chase and Wayne Jacobs won the Sub Veteran Men (DABS) and Kobus Filmalter (WAT) was the 3rd finisher in the Veteran age category!
Chris Visser and Theo Smith were 2nd and 3rd Grand Master Men (Dabs/Cen) and Peter O Connor (DABS) was 3rd in the Sub Great Grandmaster Men’s K1 race.
In the K2 race the following day, a number of paddlers teamed up with partners from the other provinces. In the Under 14 girls, Ayanda Chwayi and Tinyiko Mahwayi were the 2nd finishing girls, with two K2 boats in the results, (SOW) while Matthew van der Merwe (FLCC)finished 4th, partnered with Granville Fortuin from Paarl against stronger competition.
Alex Masina (JCC) who partnered with Bailey De Fondaumiere (KIN) achieved the third podium position in t he Under 18 highly competitive race, while the Under 23 Men’s race saw Katiso Hlahatsi and Colin Ledwaba (VLC) finishing in the 4th position.
The very tough competition on the day also showed Siseko Ntondini in 3rd in the Senior race having partnered with Hank McGregor, while Zonele Nzuza and Phineas Zulu (SOW) came in as the 8th boat in the race. Wayne Jacobs partnered with Colin Simpkins (Dabs/SCO) won the Sub Veteran race while Willem Landman and Elton du Preez (CEN) were the third boat to finish in this age category.
Centurions Ronald Pronk and Theo Smith were 2nd place winners in the Sub Grand Master Men’s age category, and Meyer Steyn with Chris Visser (DABS) were third.
