GAUTENG CANOE UNION SCHOOL LEAGUE
Those interested in information / details for participation in the school league should request to receive emails direct from the organisers at email address here:
GCU SL NEWSLETTER CAN BE FOUND on this link: gcu-school-league-newsletter-no-1-date-3-january-2017
Many school league participants and parents are new to canoeing and need explicit details and hand holding which is done direct through their own newsletter, explaining the requirements which include for example:
- that ALL boats MUST have Boat Number Slide Holders in order to participate,
- ALL paddlers wanting to register with the School League database need to be represented by a club who can confirm that they have signed the standard CSA indemnity, and will also sign off their basic water proficiency / ability to recover in the case of a swim etc, and information regarding their age groups etc before they are allowed to race in the GCU SL events.
- Juniors in the school league from Under 8 through to 18 years, need to ensure that they register with GCU through their clubs, on 1 April in order to participate in the SA Inter Provincial and Inter School event which takes place this year on 28 – 30 April 2017, in Swellendam.
- There will also be a Gauteng Sprint Trial to select the Gauteng team for the Junior (Under 18) and older age groups, during March, and juniors are encouraged to participate in order to improve their sprinting before their major junior event for Under 8 through to 18 years.
- The Gauteng sprint team selected will be racing in age groups Under 18 through to over 70 years of age at the SA Sprint Championships, which takes place on 8 / 9 April at Shongweni Dam.
The League kicks off with SPRINT races to prepare the youth for the major event of the year, the SA School Interprovincial Sprint event, an interschool event and very exciting for our juniors.
Once the sprint fitness has lifted their ability, they will start working more on long distance, for the marathon events throughout the balance of the year – which include age appropriate distances.
Juniors will be able to try out at the Gauteng Marathon Championships weekend 22 / 23 July, and aim for selection to the GCU team which will then participate in the SA Marathon event in August in Pietermaritzburg.
