THE PETE MARLIN SURFSKI RACE – 14 / 15 NOVEMBER 2015

Thanks to Canoe SA for the results which enabled some feedback for the Gautengers who participated!
This past weekend saw surfski paddlers from around the country head to East London for the Pete Marlin Surfski Race. It was two great days of racing with the event also doubling as the Gauteng Surfski Championships. If you haven’t seen any of the results have a look here (for K1) and here (for K2).
The race appears to have been a great success and much enjoyed by all – the full results are per links above, and a few of the first finishers or podium finishers are noted in this feedback report as well as the only Gauteng Lady Anna Clifford Arwidi results. The Surfski convenor will in due course announce Gauteng Championship winners.
Saturday 14 November was the K1 single ski event with sunny warm weather from the Orient beach to Yellow Sands, won by Dawid Mocke in 1h15, and the frist Gauteng paddler across the finish line was Mark Garden, in 1h33, as the 50th K1….. with Carlo Natali finishing as the first K2 in 1h35 59th overall, with Graham Neat.
Keith Flemmer finished as the third Gauteng boat in 1h36 in 65th position, with Peter O Connor as GM 5, K1 68 in 1h37.
Anna Clifford Arwidi was the only Gauteng lady to participate finishing as 8th lady K1 110, SM 14 in 1h53.
On 15 November, Sunday which was partly cloudy and cool with fresh downwind breeze from Orient Beach to Yellow Sands, won by Dawid Mocke and Tom Schilperoort of WP, the first K2 Gauteng finisher was Sean Evans 8th, with KZN partner Gene Prato, in 1h22 while the first Gauteng K2 finishing pair were Mark Garden with Peter O Connor as 5th Subvet teamin 1h32 as 29th K2 .
Anna Clifford Arwidi was in the first mixed double finishing boat with KZN partner Mark Lewin as 31st K2, and 2nd Sub Masters in a time of 1h33.
The first Grand masters were also Gautengers in 1h33:57 Graham Holm and Gary Ralph, K2 33 while Gerhard Moolman was the first K1 finisher in 1h43.
