Gautengers at the SA Sprints Championships 2 – 4 April / Roodeplaat Dam

GAUTENGERS AT THE SA SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIPS 2 – 4 APRIL 2018 – ROODEPLAAT DAM – HOSTS: ACADEMY OF CANOE DEVELOPMENT

Well done to the GCU paddlers at the SA Sprints – achieving 2nd place on the provincial log – KNCU achieved 915.5 points, GCU 584, WCCU 228 and EC 82 while there were also 42 points allocated to International participants!!!

It was a small field…. travel costs and time and late notice of change of venue has its impact as always but there was a festive vibe and the sprinters were pleased to be racing against each other while being great friends at the same time!

Victrix/Victor Ladorum positions for Gautengers included Junior Girls Alexis Rich in 5th place with 31.5 points. Caroline van der Linde earned  29.5 points finishing 7th in the junior girls line up, while the C1 paddler Tshepo Mareletse earned 6 points finishing 9th.

The SENIOR WOMEN who competed against the likes of Bridgitte Hartley (with much pride and enjoyment) brought Esti van Tonder in to 4th place with Morgan Ziervogel in 5th, and Kayla de Beer 6th, with 37.5, 19, and 13.5 points each.

The Under 23 Women looked good with Morgan Ziervogel in 2nd place with 8 points, and Kayla De Beer in 3rd, with 4 points while the 35+ age group Senior Women were all Gautengers led by Hanli Bezuidenhout with 22 points, Nicolene Stuart with 14 points, Shelley Robertson with 9.5 points and Thea van Bart with 2.5 points!

Junior boys Gauteng sprinters were led by Jonathan Jooste in 2nd position, with 48.5 points, Sean van Pletzen in 4th with 40.5 points, Gustav Smook 6th with 34 points, while Peter Tumiel, Ruan van Pletzen (U16) and Jordan Britz finished 9th, 10th and 11th on the log, with 8, 7.5 and 4 points respectively.

The Senior Men’s competition was close with tight finishes with the first Gautenger Emile Theunissen coming in at 6th place  with 38 points, while Nick Weeks, David Rodrigues, Michael Arthur, Matthew Eckhart, Joseph Sejaphala and Tshepo Mareletse finished up in 8th, 10th, 11th, 15th, 16th and 17th on the log standings, with 27, 23, 19.5, 4 and 0.5, 0.5 points respectively.

In the Under 23 Men was another tough competition where the Gautengers finished 10th and 11th, David Rodrigues and Matthew Eckhart with 14 and 10 points each.

The 35+ Men paddlers were also all Gautengers who enjoyed the competition, led by Gunther Grune with 28 points, Gerrie Moolman with 27 points, James Godden with 26 points, Willem Landman with 16 points and Willi Endres with 11 points!!

 

AND so we look forward to the up and coming youngsters from 6 – 8 April at the SA Interschool Interprovincial competition!
