FEEDBACK / GCU MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS 2 /3 JUNE 2018  –  K1

The Gauteng Marathon Championships event took place at Homestead Dam, Benoni, hosted by ERK on Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June 1998 – Guppies, Juniors and K1 paddlers on Day 1, and K2’s on Day 2…..with a chilly start on Saturday warming up to a fabulous Highveld winter morning on Sunday!

The team selection to represent the province at SA Marathon Championships at St Francis Bay on 15 – 17 June will be advised in due course……

Herewith some feedback for the K1 race hosted on Saturday 2 June starting with females, and seniors then juniors reflecting their positions in their different age groups for their different distances per age category!

Well done to the ladies at the marathon championships trialsMorgan Ziervogel, (U23) the Under 23 competitor finishing in 2 hours 7 minutes, as 25th K1 overall, while Caroline Filmalter (Wat) was the Veteran K1 competitor finishing her race in 2 hours…..as the 18th K1 overall.

The Senior Men were led by Loveday Zondi (VIC) in 1 hour 54 minutes as 9th K1 with Michael-John Robb (Dabs) 2nd in 1 hour 57, 10th finisher, and Richard Cele (VLC) 11th finisher, some 7 minutes later….

The Sub Veteran top finisher was also the top finisher of the day – Wayne Jacobs (DABS) in 1 hour 52 minutes, while Kobus Filmalter brought in the Veterans (WAT) in 1 hour 57, with Kelvin Byres (Dabs) taking 2nd place 12 seconds later, and Roy Clegg (VIC) finishing in 2:04 was the 3rd Veteran competitor.

The Sub Master top three were Anthony Rowan (Dabs) (1:47), 8th K1, Gustav Radloff (Cen) (1:58) as 15th K1 overall, and Gunther Grune (CEN) (2:05) as 24th K1….

The Sub Grand Master competitors were Ronald Pronk (Cen) 2 hours, as 19th K1, followed by Radoslaw Olszewski (ERK) (2:18) as 30th K1, while the Grand Masters were Theo Smit and Nicolas Oldert (Centurion and Dabs) in 1:40 and 1:57 respectively as 2nd and 10th K1……

The Great Grandmaster top 3 finishers were Brian Longley, Peter O Connor, and Vincent Buttrick – DABS, DABS, and ERK respectively in times of 1:42, 1:45, 1:50 as 4th, 5th, and 6th K1.

Now for the juniors feedback – with the Under 10 finishing girl being Litha Mazibukwana (Sow) in 0:37, K1 14 , the Under 12 girls were Lydette Opperman (CEN), Lungile Mahwayi (SOW) and Lesedi Bobo (SOW) in times of 47, 50, and 51 minutes while Jennifer Stuart (CEN) finished 11 seconds later as the 4th competitor.

In the Under 14 girls competition the girls were Helen Jansen Van Vuuren, Sisanda Mthabela and Tinyiko Mahwayi (VIC/FLO/SOW) finishing in 1 minute 24, 25, and 29 seconds respectively, while Alexis Rich was the Under 18 competitor (Dabs) finishing in 1 hour 44 minutes….as 9th Female overall.

The juniors boys Under 8 finishers were Connor Duncan and Wian Prinsloo (Dabs / Lik) as first and second K1 finishers in 22:08 and 22:46, while the Under 10 top 3 finishers were Matthew Wilson, Jess Webber and Luke Wilson (Dabs all round) in 26, and 27 minutes with only a second between the last two…..

Theo Dreyer, Nicholas Faure and Jordan Klopper (Dabs) were the first three Under 12 finishers with times of 37 minutes, 13 seconds more for 2nd position, and 41 seconds for the third finisher!

Adrian Rodd (Dabs) brought in the Under 14 finishers in 1 hour 19 minutes, with David Brown finishing 2nd (FLO) in 1 hour 19 minutes and 5 extra seconds, while Sean Van der Westhuizen (CEN) finished 3rd in 1 hour 29 minutes.

In the Under 16 competition, it was Connor Erwee (Dabs) who led the Gautengers, finishing in 1:43, with Finlay Leask (Dabs) finishing 2nd in 1:44) and Ruan van Pletzen (Lik) finishing 3rd….in 1:44 and an extra 19 seconds…

The Under 18 youth were led by Sibusiso Chwayi (SOW) in 1:35, and it appears he did the main race distance, with Zanenhlahla Mbala (Sow) finishing as 2nd Under 18 (but not in the main race, in the Junior distance).  Gustav Smook Jnr (LOW) also seems to have completed the main race in 1:36, while Benjamin Mntonintshi (SOW) some 28 seconds later was 2nd Under 18 as well, but not in the main race…..and the 3rd place Under 18 finishers are reflected as Sean van Pletzen (LIK) in 1:41, with Barto Visser finishing in 1;42, but in the main race distance – (PAARL/ WP).

 

FEEDBACK / GCU MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS  3 JUNE 2018 – K2

The Gauteng K2 Marathon Championships hosted at Homestead Dam, Benoni by ERK took place on a lovely warm highveld day with some keen competition.  The top 3 finishers per age category are noted below, with their times per the distances for their age group.

The junior Lady finishers were Helen Jansen Van Vuuren and Sisanda Mthabela (VIC/FLO) as 1st Under 14 team, in 1 hour 36 minutes, while the 2nd junior Under 14 team were Sowetan girls  Tinyiko Mahwayi and Thembelihle Jokozela in 1 hour 39 minutes…

Minnie Kretzschmar and Cally Henderson were the ladies representing the province on the other end of the age category scale, in the Grand Master age category (Dabs), finishing their race in 1 hour 57 minutes.

In the junior age categories,  Nicholas Erwee and Adrian Rodd (Dabs) were the Under 14 top finishers in 1 hour 29,  while Finlay Leask and Connor Erwee (Dabs) were the Under 16 competitors, finishing in 1 hour 44.  The Under 18 finishers were Gustav Smook Jnr and Bartho Visser (Low/PRL) 1st, with Sibusiso Chwayi and Zanenhlantla Mbala (Sow) 2nd, and Benjamin Mntonintshi with Bambo Fanteni (SOW) 3rd, with their times recorded as 1:28, 1:29 and 1:33 respectively.

 

The Senior Men top finishers were Wayne Jacobs and Grant Ahlschlager (Dabs) in 1 hour 45, with Kelvin Byres and Michael-John Robb (Dabs) finishing in 1 hour 51.

The Veteran top finishers were Roy Clegg and Ronald Pronk (VLC/CEN) in 1;51, with Elton Du Preez and Wally Fisher (CEN) finishing in 1:52, and Kobus Filmalter with Caroline Filmalter as the top mixed double combination, (WAT) finished in 1:57.

In the Sub Master category, Gustav Radloff and Anthony Rowan (Cen/Dabs) with the top mixed double team being Sean and Sarah Evans (Dabs) – with their times recorded as 1:48 and 1:59 respectively.

The Sub Grand Masters were Colin Wilson with Nicolas Oldert (Dabs) first, with Jim Davies and Lloyde Hanson (Dabs) second, in 1:52 and 1:59.

In the Grand master category Graham Holm and Gary Ralph (Dabs) finished first in 1:44 and Theo Smit / Pierre van der Merwe (CEN) were second in 1:51.

Brian Longley / Peter O Connor (Dabs) were the Great Grand master first finishers, in 1:38, and Vince Buttrick / Claude Graham were second, in 1:44…..
