VLC PRE DUSI NIGHT RACE – TUESDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2015
The Pre Dusi night race was threatened by nearby thunderstorms however the race was able to proceed and thoroughly enjoyed in the balmy heat wave throughout Gauteng the whole week! The race took place at 18h30 at Germiston Lake, hosted by Victoria Lake Canoe Club and some 74 boats finished which included 18 K2’s.
The winning boat was manned by Dave Hamilton-Brown with Wayne Jacobs (DABS) in 1 hour 8 minutes as the top Sub Veteran team as well, while the first K1 was Siseko Ntondini (Sow0 in 1 hour 12 minutes, as first Under 23. Tom Ngcobo won the 2nd K1 finish with Loveday Zondi 3rd all within mere seconds of each other, while the 5th finisher was the first Under 18, also SCARC – Siyabonga Tyiki in the same bunch!
Michael Stewart (ERK) was first finishing sub MasTer in 1 hour 13 minutes as 5th K1, and Alex Masina, (JCC) 1st Under 16 finisher, in 1 hour 17 minutes, as K1 12. The winning master was ERK’s Mike Barry half a minute later, and Kobus Filmalter (Watuni) finished as the 19th K1 and first Veteran, in 1 hour 19 minutes.
Nicholas Warren and Sonja Bohnsack (DABS) were the first mixed double finishers in 1 hour 20 minutes as the 5th K2 and 27th overall, and Bruce Banfield (FLCC) wo the Sub Grand Master age category as 30th K1 in 1 hour 23 minutes, with the Great Grand Master winner being Vince Buttrick (ERK) in 1:27.
Sarah Robinson (DABS) was the first of 3 brave ladies to take on the 15km night challenge with its short portages, finishing as 38th K1, with Daniela Afonso 2nd, Under 23, in 1 hour 32 minutes, and the indomitable Mariette Zandbergh (Wat) in 1:40.
A super evening to wrap up the Dusi preparations with good prizes, smart Tshirts and great food as always to enjoy at a beautiful venue!
