Why should you be doing this???
Well, it’s a limited opportunity to race on one of the finest rivers close to Gauteng – the Liebenbergsvlei River. The river is fed by pristine water from the Lesotho Highlands and is diverted through this river into the Vaal Dam. It presents a wonderful opportunity to paddle through the quiet and unspoilt Northern Freestate farmlands and to experience some great river conditions. The stretch of river from Reitz Water Works to the finish at Zorgvliet Farm outside Tweeling is a combination of fast- flowing water with some racing flats and bubblies, plus a few nice rapids and drops to navigate.
The race is the official Gauteng Canoe Unions Mixed Doubles Championship and we would like to get as many mixed doubles crews competing for the various categories and the honour of being the Gauteng Mixed Doubles Champion. To make this more appealing, thanks to some generous sponsorship from various members in the canoeing community, we are happy to announce that an additional R5000 will be added to the regular prize money apportioned out of the entry fee. This R5000 is specifically for the Mixed Doubles prize winners. In addition to the prize money, we have a classic canoeing t-shirt for the first 40 MIXED DOUBLES entries received. There will also be lucky draw prizes and food.
The race starts at 10h00, which allows for a leisurely early drive from Gauteng on Saturday morning and, if all goes well, you should be back in time the see the Boks taking Wales to task.
So come on, GCU clubs and others – get your mixed doubles crews lined up and join us for the awesome opportunity to race on this river and have a crack at this prestigious accolade, GCU Mixed Doubles Champions for 2018.
