Well done to all who participated at the full Breede River race this past weekend 6 and 7 September, at the SA K2 River Championships….!
Hardly unexpected that the Birketts/Louws, McGregors/Mocke’s, VDWalts/Maclarens / Adie/Mocke’s etc – all those well known TOP internationally recognised canoeists filled the top podium positions!
The first Gauteng boat to finish the race was the Sowetan Under 23 team in 13th position overall, and in a time of 4:22 – Siseko Ntondini with Thando Ngamlana as the 4th Under 23 finishers missing a podium position.
In 30th position the Senior K2 team crossed the finish line, Tom Ngcobo with Zonele Nzuza (Sow) in 4:35 as the 9th senior finishers and Brian Longley was in the winning Grand Master boat in 35th position, (Dabs) partnered with a Western Capie!
Alan Witherden with Peter O Connor (Dabs) were in the 2nd finishing K3, as the 2nd Grand Master finishers in 4:42 and another Western Capie filling the third spot in the boat! Antje Manfroni, Anna Clifford Arwidi and Nigel Harvey (Dabs) finished as the 3rd K3, and 5th Mixed Double in 4:46 50th overall, and Siyabonga Tyiki with Simnikiwe Ntondini came in as the 46th K2, and 5th Under 18 combination (SOW), in 4:47, followed seconds later by Colin Simpkins partnered with Dabs’ Andy Leith who were 3rd Masters.
Under 16 Anya Botes partnered up with Julia van der Westhuysen from the Cape to finish in 5:08, K2 93, as the 9th Female boat, and claimed the 2nd podium position in the age group which completes the GCU podium position achievers…..
It was a well supported race, with 168 K2 finishers, and 24 K1’s, as well as 9 K3’s so well done to all achievers in the strong competitive field!
