TRAC LOWVELD CROC CANOE MARATHON 2021 REPORT – SCROLL DOWN FOR RESULTS

The TRAC Lowveld Croc Canoe Marathon took place on 23 October 2021 attracting paddlers from Gauteng and KZN to race on one of the best rivers in South Africa.
Sixty paddlers started on a very hot Lowveld Saturday morning below the Kwena Dam wall. An unexpected increase in the water release awaited the paddlers due to the recent heat with the water flowing at 7.5 cumec ensuring clean, cold and fast water.
The top 10 seeded paddlers started one minute apart with the rest of the paddlers startingin 30 seconds intervalsthereafter as they set out tocover the 33 km oftechnical rapids that make the Crocodile river so special.
A mixture of seasoned veterans and novices made up the field with those having had the experience of paddling the river in previous years dominating the podium.
The 2021 Trac Lowveld Croc Canoe Marathon race was won by former marathon world champion, Wayne Jacobs in a time of 1:59:37. This was his first victory after many years of Top 10 results. He was followed by CarlFolscher(KZN) in 2:00:21 and former winner, SisekoNtodini 3rd in 2:02:15.
Unfortunately, Olivia Woodburn could not come down to defend her ladies title and there were also no challengers for this title this year.
The Gundu award, named after Mike Hay, a stalwart of the race,is awarded for the first novice of the day which ent to Jeremy Maher (KZN) whom finished in a time of 2:10:01.
The increased water release made the level more forgiving and assisted the paddlers navigate the tricky sections of the river with only two paddlers not being able to finish the race.
Positive feedback was received from all paddlers and the success of the event is only possible with the support of great sponsors and the members of the Lowveld Canoe Club.
