FEEDBACK/RACE REPORT : JCC TWO DAY KLIP RIVER RACE 26/27 JANUARY 2019

FEEDBACK / RACE REPORT:   THE TWO DAY KLIP RIVER RACE – HOSTED BY JCC – 26 AND 27 JANUARY 2019 – DUSI TRAINING!!!

Please let me have any feedback / interesting items from the race to add to the race report!!

I DO know one boat wrapped at Caravan Park rapid, shooting on the LEFT of the tongue, we’ve known for a year or more,  that there is a nasty mean rock that’s tumbled down there and is breaking noses of boats!)  Stay as right as you can in the tongue….!

Well done to the TWO Lady paddlers who completed the TWO DAYS OF TWO DAY KLIP – a river race hosted by Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan, on Saturday and Sunday 26 / 27 January 2019 – with a good river water level, subsided somewhat since last weekend, but the rain storms on Friday and Saturday night held the level well making the paddling most enjoyable!

Sylvia Nel (Lik) finished both days with portages in 6 hours 35 minutes, in the Master Age Category, while relatively new river paddler Hanli Bezuidenhout (CEN) – Sub Master Age Category finished in 7 hours 17 minutes…..!  a good tough workout to prepare for the FNB Dusi next month.

The winning paddler was Siseko Ntondini (Dabs) in 4:20, with a good lead, with Siyabonga Tyiki (Dabs) as 1st Under 23, and Simnikiwe Ntondini (Dabs) in 4:24 2nd Under 23 while the 2nd Senior finisher was Alex Roberts (Dabs) in 4:26 as first Sub Veteran.  Kobus Filmalter was the 1st Veteran finisher (Wat) in 4:26, and the 2nd Senior to cross the finish line was Chazani Gumede (Dabs) in 4:27.

The first Under 18, Benjamin Mntonintshi (Sow) crossed the finish line, in 4:35 at the end of the two days, while the 3rd Senior Finisher, MJ Robb (Dabs) clocked 4h36.

More age category finishers included Andre Zandbergh (Wat) in 5:02 as 1st Sub Master, while Troy Clark (Dabs) finished as 1st Master in 5:04.

Connor Erwee (Dabs) was the youngest finisher at the race, in  a time of 5 hours 11 minutes, as 1st Under 16, and in the older categories the first finishing Sub Grand Masters in a K2 included Dabs/VIC partnership Michael Merry and Craig Johnston,  in 5:21 – in this K1 year, the K1 SGM Winner was Franz Lottering (ERK) in 5:34.

Kevin Davie (Dabs) finished as the oldest paddler, the first Great Grand master, in a time of 6:18.

The weather was sunny warm and pleasant both days although Sunday started off overcast with a cool breeze.  Well done to paddlers on their training achievements, and to JCC for hosting the opportunity to help with Dusi preprations!
