FEEDBACK – SA SPRINTS – SHONGWENI DAM 12/13 MARCH 2016
Well done to those Gautengers who participated in the SA Sprint Championship event – an important and Olympic discipline for canoeists!
The accumulated points for the races participated in, reflect that Alex Masina (JCC) finished as 5th junior, Under 18 with 46 points, while Jonathan Jooste (ACD) finished 13th on the overall points log with 12 points. Matthew Eckhart (DABS) with 6 points finished 17th.
The junior girls from Gauteng were represented by Caroline van der Linde (LIK) who finished 5th with 48 points.
The winning male junior, KZN’s Jean van der Westhuyzen (KZN) led the young canoeists with an overwhelming 97 points, an impressive 25 points ahead of his 2nd place contender Jarryd Gibson also from KZN. The girls juniors were led by Donna Hutton (KZN) with 80 points also with a lead of 18 points over 2nd place Kyeta Purchase.
The Under 23 Gauteng representive was Nicholas Weeks (ERK) who finished up with 45 points, and a 2nd place in the Under 23 age category, while being 3rd in the overall senior men race, while David Rodrigues (DABS) was the 15th finisher overall, with 15 points. James Godden finished 23rd with 4 points. The KZN winner of the Under 23 event was Louis Hattingh with Anthony Collopy (WP) finished as top senior with 63 and 58 points respectively.
Esti van Tonder (ACD) was the Gauteng female Senior paddler finishing as 3rd senior, competing with the Under 23 women, with 48 points overall. Bridgitte Hartley (KZN and Olympic Bronze medallist) won the Women’s sprint competition with 101 points, with 2nd place Bianca Beavitt (WP) lodging 65.5 points overall.
The Gauteng Para-canoeists performed extremely well, finishing in the top 3 places on the log with 14 points each for Constant Olivier (FLCC) and Graham Paull (DABS) representing Sub Grand Master age category and Senior age category as well as Under 23 Jonathan Wing (TUKS) with 10 points. Divan van Tonder (ACD) was the 2nd Under 23 finisher with 2 points.
Our C1 Paddlers also topped the log with ERK’s Radoslav Olszewski and Calvin Makoto finishing in the top two positions as first Master and first Senior, with 32 and 26 points respectively.
